Obama Healthcare Speech
WEEB Commentary by John Rowderdink 3/13/2010
This week I had a chance to listen to President Obama’s healthcare speech at Arcadia University, where he made a full-throated pitch for his health care initiative. He was in full campaign mode, and the audience of college students ate it up, cheering repeatedly as he made fantastic claims about his plan to change American’s health care system. He was very eloquent as he focused on three main objectives of his plan:
First, he said it will correct the worst evils of the health care insurance companies. You know the story by now… It will eliminate refusal for pre-existing conditions, make it impossible for the insurance companies to cancel anyone, eliminate lifetime maximum benefits, reduce premiums and so on.
Second, it will insure millions of Americans who for various reasons, can’t or won’t buy health insurance. Of course, all of this was supported by tear-jerking stories of people who had been wronged by the evil insurance companies.
Third, it will save money for individuals, businesses and the government.
So in other words, the old saying is wrong; there is a free lunch after all.
Well, any reasonable person knows that if we’re going to do all these wonderful things it’s going to cost money and lots of it. And our government doesn’t have the money. They will simply borrow some more.
I was frankly amazed at the brazenness with which the President misled and even lied to these college students. It became clear to me that the President will stop at nothing in order to achieve this goal. That includes the election chances of his fellow Democrats and even himself. He seems to have concluded that health care is the key to his legacy, and he’s going to get it, no matter what the cost.
The unfortunate conclusion I came to was that Joe Wilson of South Carolina was right when he said “Mr. President, you lie!”
